Darren Gilbert was born in Ilion, NY but grew up in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. An avid reader, he particularly enjoys military history, epic sagas, spy novels and historical fiction. In addition to serving in the U.S. Army from 1979 to 1983, Darren has over 33 years of martial arts training including managing his own martial arts school for 12 years. He has earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Tennessee and Western Governors University respectively. He is also a graduate of Executive Security International’s Executive Protection Program and is a Certified Protection Specialist. His new novel, Serpents Underfoot, is available from Amazon.com. Darren currently lives in Cary, NC with his German Shepherd, Sophie.

Writing and Blogging
In addition to writing novels, Darren enjoys blogging and has been doing so for about 10 years. He posts information about his book and related activities, book reviews, food reviews, information about German Shepherds, pro-military stories, and occasional political musings on his blog page.
He is currently working on the sequel to his first novel, Serpents Underfoot. It will include a return to Vietnam, more Montagnard history, and of course, thrilling action with JD Cordell!
While he no longer runs a karate dojo, Darren Gilbert stays as active in martial arts as he can with his busy schedule. He attends several seminars a year and works out with friends and fellow martial artists. He began his Isshin-ryu training with Sensei Allen Wheeler in 1983. His last formal instructor was the late Sensei Sherman Harrill. Other influences have been John Kerker, Eddie Satterfield, AJ Advincula, Louis Grinnell, and Remy Presas. Darren also studied Tae Kwon Do while stationed at Camp Casey in South Korea from December of 1981 to December of 1982.

Darren Gilbert likes to focus on traditional karate with an emphasis on a solid understanding of the basics, understanding the kata and the application of the lessons learned from kata in self-defense.
