An article in the online new magazine, Newsday, considers whether burglars used the Journal New’s published list of registered gun owners to pinpoint a White Plains residence on a controversial handgun permit database. The White Plains residence was burglarized on Saturday, and the burglars’ target was the homeowner’s gun safe.
According to the story, at least two burglars broke into a home on Davis Avenue at 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Fortunately, they were unsuccessful in their attempt to open the safe, which contained the legally owned weapons. According to Newday‘s sources, one suspect was taken into custody.
The gun owner was not home when the burglary occurred, the source said. The victim, who is in his 70s, told Newsday on Sunday that he did not want to comment while the police investigation continues. The homeowner’s name and address were included recently on the controversial interactive map of gun permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties published on The Journal News‘ website.
Police are investigating whether or not the database played any role in the burglars’ decision to target the home, the law enforcement source said. The Journal News has been the target of sharp criticism from 2nd Amendment advocates and some media ethicists since running the story and interactive map Dec. 23. The story and map were published 10 days after the horrific Newtown, Conn., mass murder, by a disturbed young man, that tragically claimed the lives of 20 young children and seven adults.
A call to the Journal News for comment was not returned.
Although a few anti-gun groups have come to the defense of the White Plains-based newspaper, many elected officials, including State Sen. Greg Ball (R-Patterson), have stated that the permit map could aid criminals. This may indeed prove to be the case!
Sen. Ball stated Sunday that, “If the connection is proven, this is further proof that these maps are not only an invasion of privacy but that they present a clear and present danger to law-abiding, private citizens.” I would also add that it is also another shining example of the progressive-liberal tactic of never letting an opportunity to thoughtlessly and irresponsibly use a horrific event to further promote their political agenda pass, while blindly ignoring any possible repercussions or dangers to honest, hard-working Americans!
On Monday, Ball will introduce a third bill into the state Legislature intended to keep the names of those who have gun permits private.
